Frequently Asked Questions

I just purchased a new computer and I can't load SCDB for Windows on it.  I am using Windows 7.

Windows 7 comes in several different versions.  They are Home Premium, Professional and Ultimate.  In addition, these come in 32-bit and 64-bit editions.  Most new computers are being sold with Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.  At this time, SCDB for Windows Version 3 is NOT supported on the 64-bit editions of Windows HOWEVER, in the Professional and Ultimate versions of Windows 7, Microsoft does supply a free addition to Windows called XP Compatibility Mode.  SCDB for Windows Version 3 DOES work on the 64-bit version of Windows 7 Professional & Ultimate in XP Compatibility Mode.  You can find out more about XP Compatibility Mode by clicking on this link "Microsoft XP Compatibility Mode".

We are in the development process for a new version of SCDB for Windows that will run on all versions of Windows 7 with out the need for the XP Compatibility Mode extensions.  Click here to see more information on SCDB for Windows Version 4.

I have SCDB for Windows Version 4 and information I enter in the Add/Make Changes Screen is not saving.  What's the problem?

There are two ways to close the Add/Make Changes Window - only one of them is the proper and documented way.  If you press the red X at the top right of the window, you have just told Windows to close this window and do nothing else - close this window immediately.

The correct and documented way to close the window is via the CLOSE button at the bottom of the window.  This will save all your data and close the window.

I want hands-on support rather than phone support.  Do you offer that service?

We do with our Premium Support plan?  With Premium Support, we use secure remote control software to take control of your PC.  This allows us to "sit right in front of your computer" without actually being there.  You can also watch what we do right on your screen.  In addition to providing support of our own software, we can help you with virus clean-up, increasing system performance, remote backup and general support with many of your computer and software questions.  This is a subscription service.  The monthly fee is $19.95 and it provides you with UNLIMITED support for our SCDB for Windows software PLUS 30 minutes of general computer support per month.  If you need more time above your monthly allowance of 30 minutes, additional time costs $35 per hour - far below the standard on-site rate other techs charge.  Download a brochure for Premium Support now.

I have a CD-RW drive or a Flash Drive.  How do I perform a backup and restore using these drives?

Since you have a CD-RW, bypass the backup in SCDB for Windows. You will need to copy all files from the C:\STAMP folder that end in .DBF and .DBT. For example, you can use your CD-RW software to copy C:\STAMP\USA.DBF and C:\STAMP\USA.DBF to your CD-RW drive. When you need to restore, simply copy the files back the the C:\STAMP folder.

IMPORTANT NOTE: When you copy the files BACK to C:\STAMP, most likely, they will be marked as READ-ONLY (because that's how they appear on a CD-ROM). You WILL need to set them back to READ-WRITE.

See your CD-RW software documentation for more on the copy aspect. Look into the Windows help under FILE ATTRIBUTES for help on setting files to READ-WRITE.

You have a US stamp of 2451-1 and 2451-2, etc. You also have dash numbers on 2452 and perhaps others. In looking through the Scott catalogue and the Postal Services Guide to US stamps, I can't find the dash numbers. The descriptions you provide offer no clue that I can figure out. What's the story?

These are plate numbers for PNC strips of 3 and/or 5.

I am installing the annual updates and the password does not work.  What is the problem?

Each update has it's own password.  The most likely problem is that you are trying to install the wrong thing.  All of the annual updates are installed from the THIRD selection on your DVD.  It is labeled "Install 2010 Annual Updates".  Please be sure that you are installing the correct product.  The Version 3.2.5 Upgrade is NOT the 2010 Annual Update.

I can't see any stamp images.  How can this be corrected?

First, ensure that you have installed the images.  This can be done using the FOURTH selection on the DVD, Install NEW Databases & Stamp Images.  Once the images are installed, start SCDB for Windows and go to the User Setup page.  Be sure that box is checked that indicates you have images installed.  In the box below the check box, type in the drive letter for the drive that holds the images.  Most likely it is drive "C".   Press the OK button at the bottom of the window.

How can I restore a file that I backed up with SCDB for Windows?

There are actually two ways?

First, you can use the program to restore the file for you.  This will ONLY work if the file you are trying to restore DOES NOT EXIST.  For example, if you are trying to restore USA.DBF and the database already is in the C:\STAMP folder, the program will not overwrite or restore that file.  You would need to rename the database files first using the Windows File Manager or delete them with the Windows File Manager.

The second method is quite easy and you can use it to overwrite existing database files in C:\STAMP.  You will use your Windows File Manager and locate the media you put the backup on.  The SCDB for Windows backup file is a standard ZIP compressed file.  Using the Windows File Manager, locate the backup file and RIGHT CLICK on the file.  In the menu, choose EXTRACT.  When you go thru the short menu, you will see a box where the file will be restored to (the destination).  You MUST erase what is in the box and insert C:\STAMP.  Remember, if the files already exist there, you will be prompted to overwrite them.  Most likely, you will want to overwrite them.

Will SCDB for Windows Version 4 run on my computer with 64-bit Windows 7?

Yes and it will also run on the 64-bit versions of Windows Vista.

Can SCDB for Windows Version 4 import all of my data from earlier versions of SCDB for Windows?

Yes, the program can impart data from SCDB for Windows Version 3.  Users of Version 2 who never upgraded to Version 3 will need to contact us so we can get the data imported for them.  We will do this free of charge.

Can I install the 2011 USA (or other country updates) AFTER the data has been imported into SCDB for Windows Version 4?

NO.  The 2011 Annual update program is ONLY for use with Version 2 & 3 database files.  You will need to install the Annual Updates and update your data files PRIOR to importing into Version 4.  If you are unable to do this because your data is not install on your 64-bit computer, please contact us and we will perform the 2011 Annual Update on your data before you import into Version 4.  The purchase of the appropriate 2011 Annual Update is required.
